Hip joint replacement · Minimal-invasive · Vienna
Hip osteoarthritis can severely limit your mobility and quality of life. When conservative therapies have been exhausted, hip replacement is the most effective way back to an active life. As a specialist in joint replacement I rely on the most modern minimal-invasive techniques – with a shorter hospital stay and faster rehabilitation.

In advanced hip osteoarthritis (coxarthrosis) the joint cartilage is so worn that bone rubs on bone. This causes severe pain, restricted mobility and a major loss of quality of life.
The total hip replacement replaces the worn joint with a high-quality implant of ceramic, metal and special polyethylene – precisely matched to your anatomy.
With a minimal-invasive surgical technique I protect the surrounding muscles and soft tissue – meaning less blood loss, less pain after surgery and a much faster recovery.
Typical symptoms that make a replacement necessary:
My principle:
I only recommend surgery when it is truly indicated. We decide together – based on your findings, your symptoms and your quality of life.
Medical history, X-ray/CT, discussion of the optimal implant and timing of surgery.
Minimal-invasive total hip replacement under spinal or general anaesthesia. Duration approx. 60–90 minutes.
A few days in the private hospital. Physiotherapy begins on the first day after surgery.
Regular check-ups by Dr. Ghobrial, outpatient physiotherapy, return to mobility.
Modern hip replacement means early mobility – this timeline shows the typical course after total hip replacement. We define your personal plan together.
On the day of surgery or the day after, you stand up for the first time with physiotherapy and take your first steps.
About 5–7 days as an inpatient: walking with crutches, practising stairs, wound checks. Then discharge home or to rehab.
Inpatient or outpatient rehab: gait training, muscle building, increasing walking distance without crutches.
Driving is usually possible again and daily life is largely back to normal. Follow-up with X-ray at my practice.
Cycling, swimming, hiking and joint-friendly sports are possible again – with an implant designed to last for decades.
Surgery and hospital stay generally covered in full
Direct billing with your insurer – no upfront payment
Surgery date usually within 1–2 weeks
Transparent cost estimate before the procedure – no surprises
Surgery as a self-payer possible at any time
Practice visits: approx. 80% reimbursement of the statutory tariff from your public insurer
At Vienna’s private hospitals surgery dates are usually available within 1–2 weeks – without the months-long waiting lists of the public system. After your first consultation I take care of the cost estimate, insurance approval and scheduling with the hospital.
A hip replacement is indicated when hip osteoarthritis has progressed so far that conservative measures no longer provide sufficient relief. Typical signs: persistent pain at rest, severely reduced walking distance, night pain, a clear loss of quality of life. In the first consultation I assess your situation together with you.
With modern minimal-invasive technique patients are often mobile with crutches on the day of surgery. The inpatient stay is usually a few days in the private hospital. This is followed by 2–3 weeks of outpatient or inpatient rehabilitation.
With supplementary (Sonderklasse) insurance (e.g. UNIQA, Generali, Wiener Städtische, Allianz and many more) all costs of the operation and hospital stay are generally covered in full. I am happy to provide a cost estimate in advance that you can forward directly to your insurer.
With high-quality materials, modern hip replacements generally last 20–30 years and longer. Durability depends on activity level, body weight and implant type. In the first consultation we choose the optimal implant for your situation together.
I operate at four renowned Vienna private hospitals: Klinikum Währing (Atomos), Wiener Privatklinik, Privatklinik Döbling and Rudolfinerhaus. We choose the hospital together in the first consultation – depending on the procedure, your insurance and your personal preferences.
Of course. Dr. Ghobrial works exclusively as a private physician (Wahlarzt) but treats all patients. He cares for private patients, those with supplementary (Sonderklasse) insurance and self-payers. As a Wahlarzt you can have part of the consultation and treatment costs reimbursed by your statutory health insurer afterwards – the exact terms vary by insurer. Supplementary insurance generally covers outpatient and inpatient costs depending on the contract.
