Minimal-invasive shoulder surgery · Vienna
Shoulder pain can significantly limit quality of life – while sleeping, during sport, in everyday life. As a specialist in arthroscopic shoulder surgery I treat rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and impingement syndrome minimally invasively and precisely – in Vienna's leading private hospitals.

Through two to three tiny accesses (about 5 mm) I introduce a high-resolution camera and fine instruments into the shoulder joint. This allows a direct view of tendons, cartilage, bursae and the joint capsule – and at the same time the precise treatment of any damage found.
Compared with open surgery this means: significantly less surgical trauma, less pain during healing, faster recovery and substantially better long-term function of the operated shoulder.
Rotator cuff & tendons
Rotator cuff tear (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis)
Long biceps tendon: tenotomy or tenodesis – depending on age and activity level
Instability & labrum
Shoulder instability: Bankart repair for dislocations
SLAP lesion: suture or re-fixation of the labrum
Pain syndromes & other pathologies
Impingement syndrome: subacromial decompression
Calcific tendinitis: removal of calcium deposits
Frozen shoulder: arthroscopic capsulotomy
AC joint: resection of the lateral clavicle (Mumford procedure)
Loose bodies: removal of loose cartilage or bone fragments
Over 1,000 procedures, many of them on the shoulder – with continuous further training
I plan the entire treatment – from diagnosis through surgery to full rehabilitation
Minimal-invasive technique means less pain, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to everyday life
Clinical examination, analysis of your MRI images, an honest assessment: conservative or surgery? I explain all options clearly and answer your questions.
Choice of hospital, scheduling, clarification of insurance and costs. Before the procedure you know exactly what to expect.
Depending on the findings, the shoulder arthroscopy takes 45–120 minutes. It is usually performed on an outpatient basis or with one overnight stay. The success of the operation – and therefore your health – is my highest goal.
A structured rehabilitation plan with targeted physiotherapy. I accompany you until full shoulder function is restored.
The shoulder needs patience – this timeline shows the typical course after shoulder arthroscopy. Your personal plan depends on the procedure and is set individually.
After the procedure the arm is placed in a sling or brace. Pain management is adjusted individually.
Depending on the procedure, the sling stays for 2–6 weeks. Passive motion exercises with physiotherapy start early to prevent stiffness.
Gradual transition to active exercises. Office work is usually possible after 1–2 weeks, physical work considerably later.
Targeted muscle building, overhead movements return. Driving is usually possible again from week 6.
Return to sport and full loading depending on the procedure – after rotator cuff repair this can take up to 6 months.
Surgery and hospital stay generally covered in full
Direct billing with your insurer – no upfront payment
Surgery date usually within 1–2 weeks
Transparent cost estimate before the procedure – no surprises
Surgery as a self-payer possible at any time
Practice visits: approx. 80% reimbursement of the statutory tariff from your public insurer
At Vienna’s private hospitals surgery dates are usually available within 1–2 weeks – without the months-long waiting lists of the public system. After your first consultation I take care of the cost estimate, insurance approval and scheduling with the hospital.
Small partial tears can become symptom-free with conservative therapy (physiotherapy, injections). Complete tendon tears, however, do not heal without surgery. The longer you wait, the more the tendon retracts – which worsens the surgical outlook. I recommend an early assessment.
That depends on the structure operated on – usually 2 to 6 weeks. The sling protects the repaired structures during healing. Targeted physiotherapy to restore strength and mobility then begins.
After a subacromial decompression (impingement) often after a few weeks. After a rotator cuff repair it takes a few months until full load capacity for overhead or contact sport is reached. The individual rehab plan depends on your procedure and your goals.
With supplementary (Sonderklasse) insurance (e.g. UNIQA, Generali, Wiener Städtische, Allianz and many more) all costs of the operation and hospital stay are generally covered in full. I am happy to provide a cost estimate in advance that you can forward directly to your insurer.
I operate at four renowned Vienna private hospitals: Klinikum Währing (Atomos), Wiener Privatklinik, Privatklinik Döbling and Rudolfinerhaus. We choose the hospital together in the first consultation – depending on the procedure, your insurance and your personal preferences.
Of course. Dr. Ghobrial works exclusively as a private physician (Wahlarzt) but treats all patients. He cares for private patients, those with supplementary (Sonderklasse) insurance and self-payers. As a Wahlarzt you can have part of the consultation and treatment costs reimbursed by your statutory health insurer afterwards – the exact terms vary by insurer. Supplementary insurance generally covers outpatient and inpatient costs depending on the contract.
Appointments are usually available within a few days. For urgent cases I try to arrange priority scheduling. You can reach me directly at 1040 Vienna: +43 1 585 62 60 or 1020 Vienna: +43 1 890 45 20, or book online via haelsi.at.
