In a knee arthroscopy, a camera and fine instruments are introduced into the joint through two to three tiny incisions (about 5 mm). The knee can be examined from the inside and treated at the same time – without the long incision of open surgery.
The result: minimal trauma to the surrounding tissue, less pain after surgery, faster recovery and an excellent cosmetic result thanks to barely visible scars.

Depending on the findings, the knee arthroscopy takes 30–90 minutes. It is usually performed on an outpatient basis or with one overnight stay. The success of the operation – and therefore your health – is my highest goal.

The procedure is performed as day surgery or with one overnight stay. First steps with crutches are usually possible on the day of surgery.
Cooling, elevation, short walks. Office work is often possible after a few days. Stitches are removed after 10–14 days.
Targeted physiotherapy and increasing daily activity. Standing and physically demanding jobs take a little longer.
Cycling and swimming are usually possible again. Muscle strength is systematically rebuilt.
Demanding sports depending on the procedure. After meniscus repair or ACL reconstruction the return to sport takes considerably longer – up to 6 months.

At Vienna’s private hospitals surgery dates are usually available within 1–2 weeks – without the months-long waiting lists of the public system. After your first consultation I take care of the cost estimate, insurance approval and scheduling with the hospital.
No. Small, stable tears in the inner part of the meniscus can sometimes heal conservatively. Unstable tears, bucket-handle tears or symptoms with locking of the joint do require surgery. I discuss honestly with you whether a procedure is necessary – or whether we can wait first.
There is no blanket answer – it depends on which procedure was performed. After meniscus surgery many patients are back to office work within 1–2 weeks; after cruciate ligament reconstruction a return to sport in about 6 months is realistic. I always discuss the recovery time individually with you.
With supplementary (Sonderklasse) insurance (e.g. UNIQA, Generali, Wiener Städtische, Allianz and many more) all costs of the operation and hospital stay are generally covered in full. I am happy to provide a cost estimate in advance that you can forward directly to your insurer.
I operate at four renowned Vienna private hospitals: Klinikum Währing (Atomos), Wiener Privatklinik, Privatklinik Döbling and Rudolfinerhaus. We choose the hospital together in the first consultation – depending on the procedure, your insurance and your personal preferences.
Of course. Dr. Ghobrial works exclusively as a private physician (Wahlarzt) but treats all patients. He cares for private patients, those with supplementary (Sonderklasse) insurance and self-payers. As a Wahlarzt you can have part of the consultation and treatment costs reimbursed by your statutory health insurer afterwards – the exact terms vary by insurer. Supplementary insurance generally covers outpatient and inpatient costs depending on the contract.
